The stud is one of the most common forms of piercing jewelry and is usually worn in ear piercings. It consists of a short bar (commonly 20 to 16 ga). At one end is a fixed ball or flat decorative head. After the earring is inserted into a piercing it is held in place with a butterfly, which clips on to the end of the bar.

Jewelry design - Claw
The claw, or talon is essentially a curved taper which is worn in stretched ear lobe piercings. The thickest end is generally flared and may be decorated, and a rubber o-ring may also be used to prevent the talon from becoming dislodged when worn. Common materials include acrlyic plastic and glass. A similar item of jewelry is the crescent, which as the name suggests, is shaped like a crescent moon and is tapered a both ends.

Jewelry design - Captive bead ring
A captive bead ring (CBR) (also ball closure ring or less frequently captive ball ring) is a common example of body piercing jewelry. The captive bead or ball fits into a small opening in the circle of the ring. The bead is slightly larger than this opening and has small indentations or depressions that correspond to the ring's end-points so that it may fit snugly against them, thus completing the circuit of the ring. Often, a hole is drilled through the bead to allow easier fitting.
Jewelry design - Barbell
Barbell style piercing jewelry is composed of a straight bar and with a bead on each end, one or both beads unscrew for removal and/or changing of the beads. Often one of the beads is fixed, either via epoxy or welding, so that only one bead is used to install or remove the jewelry. Barbell threads are usually right handed.
